Caramelised Onion with Mung Daal

A simple and delicious mung daal topped with beautifully caramelised onions stirred through for extra flavour and richness.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mung daal
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water
  • Cooking oil

Method

    Rinse lentils thoroughly under running water and drain.

    In a pot add water, salt and lentils. Let it boil then cover and leave on low heat for 15-20 minutes.

    In the meantime, fry the onions in a little bit of oil till brown.

  4. 4

    Add turmeric powder and ground coriander powder to the lentils. Stir well to coat the lentils in the spices.

    When lentils are soft, turn off cooker and add caramelised onions with the oil.

    Stir till all onions and oil are mixed in properly.

    Serve with rice, bread, salad or roti.
