Mixed Peas and Potato Pilau
A firm favourite with kids - this peas and potato pilau is not only very healthy but also gentle on the stomach, making it a perfect choice for a family meal.
Ingredients
- 2 medium-sized onions, sliced
- Oil
- 220g peas
- 160g potatoes (peeled and cubed)
- 600g of rice
- 1,280g of water
- 2 tbsps garam masala
- 2 tbsps cumin seeds
- Salt to taste
Method

In a pot, heat some oil and add the sliced onions. Cook on low heat until translucent.

Add water and salt to the pot, cover and cook for 5-10 minutes until the water dries up on low heat.

Increase heat to medium and add the chopped baby potatoes. Cook while stirring until half tender.

Add the frozen peas (3 cups, using the same cup used for measuring rice and water).

Stir and cook the vegetables for a few minutes.

Add garam masala and cumin seeds, stir for a couple of minutes.

Pour in the of water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes.

Increase heat to medium or high and add the soaked rice. Gently mix from the sides, being careful not to break the grains.

Check salt level and add more if needed.

Reduce heat to medium and cover until the water dries up.

Optionally, sprinkle fresh lemon juice or place half a lemon on top to prevent grains from sticking.

Once hardly any water is left, cover and cook on low heat (dham) for 10 minutes on each side.

Turn off the cooker and let rest for another 10 minutes.

Serve with raita, salad, chutney, and curry. The pilau tastes really good on its own.
