Potato Cutlets (Tikis)

Ingredients

  • 1kg potatoes
  • Salt, to taste
  • Green chillies, finely chopped, to taste
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 to 4 tsps cumin seeds
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying

Method

  1. 1

Boil the potatoes until they are soft and fully cooked. Once done, peel the potatoes and mash them in a mixing bowl.

  2. 2

To the mashed potatoes, add salt, finely chopped green chillies, cumin seeds, and finely chopped onions. Mix everything together until well combined.

  3. 3

In a separate bowl, beat the egg.

  4. 4

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan over medium heat.

  5. 5

Shape a small portion of the potato mixture into a round cutlet.

  6. 6

Dip the cutlet into the beaten egg, making sure that it is coated on all sides.

  7. 7

Place the cutlet in the heated oil and shallow fry until it turns golden brown on one side. Flip it over and cook the other side until it is also golden brown.

  8. 8

Remove the cutlet from the pan and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

  9. 9

Repeat the process with the remaining potato mixture, adding more oil to the pan as necessary.

  10. 10

Serve the potato cutlets hot, with chutneys, salad, or your choice of accompaniments.
