Channa Curry
A hearty and flavourful chickpea curry with aromatic spices including cinnamon and garam masala. Soak the chickpeas overnight with baking powder for the best results.
Ingredients
- 2 medium-sized onions, sliced
- 3 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 250g of chickpeas
- 2 tsps of cinnamon powder
- 1/4 tsp garam masala (homemade is best, check the spice blends section.
- Coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish
- Salt, to taste
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp of Kashmiri ground red chillies
- Oil for cooking
Method

The night before, wash the chickpeas and soak in water with baking powder.

In the morning, wash the chickpeas and add to the pot with the onions, garlic and tomatoes.

Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and leave. Stir well, then cover the pot and let the tomatoes, chickpeas and onions cook till tender.

Increase the heat to high, add spices apart from the garam masala. Also add the garlic. Stir the mixture until most of the onions and tomatoes are combined and mixed.

Let the curry come to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and add the garam masala.

Stir well, cover and leave on low heat for about 15 minutes.

Before serving, garnish the curry with chopped coriander leaves if desired.

Serve chickpea curry hot, ideally with naan, rice, or chapatis.
