Squashed Turnips
My mum always advises, "When buying turnips, choose the heavier ones as they are less likely to have interior spoilage". Turnips are very easy to cook and it's quite hard to go wrong with them.
Ingredients
- 1 kg turnips (purple and white ones)
- Salt, to taste
- Ground red chillies, to taste
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 cup of milk (optional)
- Oil for cooking
- Fresh green coriander for garnishing
Method
- 1
Start by peeling and cutting the turnips into medium sized pieces.
- 2
Place the turnip pieces in a pot and add enough water to cover them.
- 3
Bring the water to a boil and let the turnips cook until they are soft. This might take 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the turnip pieces.
- 4
Once the turnips are soft, drain the water from the pot.
- 5
Add some oil to the pot along with the salt, ground red chillies, and turmeric. Mix well to coat the turnips in the spices.
- 6
Cook the turnips over medium heat, squash them as they cook. Continue this process until most of the turnips are squashed and well incorporated with the spices.
- 7
If using, add the milk to the pot and stir until it's mixed in with the squashed turnips.
- 8
Garnish with fresh green coriander before serving. Serve your mashed turnips hot as a side dish or main course. You can enjoy this dish with chapatis, rice, or on its own.
